Mt. Vernon General Baptist Church
Church History

Meet our church... Organized in 1873 we’re Mt. Vernon’s oldest Baptist congregation and we are still growing! We started in a borrowed building (Thanks First Presbyterian!) but now we enjoy our third location.
Our church continues to change and adapt as we communicate the timeless message of God’s love in a timely fashion.

Why General Baptist?... In the 1820’s, right here in Southern Indiana, a young Baptist pastor began to preach the message of a ‘general’ atonement. Benoni Stinson proudly proclaimed the good news that “Jesus Christ tasted death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). Because that message was not readily accepted by other Christians in the region a new group of churches was organized which eventually lead to a denomination organized for missionary activity. We still gladly proclaim that everyone can be saved since “God is not willing that anyone should perish” (2 Peter 3:9).

Want to know more?... Just give us a call or stop by the church office or stick around following one of our worship services. One of our pastors or one of our members will be available to help you. Below you will find some links to more information about us.
